Brushing Your Dogs Teeth | Dog Training Gentle

Brushing Your Dogs Teethdog training

Brushing

  • It is recommended that you start brushing your dogs teeth when it is still a puppy, so it would be a familiar experience as it grows older.
  • The more often you brush your dogs teeth, the better.
  • First of all start out by putting your dog in a room where both of you are most comfortable in.
  • You can start out by asking your vet to give you the appropriate size toothbrush for your dog, and the toothpaste it will be most comfortable with.
  • I started brushing my dogs teeth when it was still a puppy, so it allowed me to put my finger in its mouth. If your dog lets you, then take some toothpaste on your finger, lift the lip, and gently brush the surface of your dogs teeth with your finger.
  • Keep doing that everyday until it gets familiar with the process.
  • When you think your dog is comfortable with a toothbrush, put both the toothpaste and the toothbrush in the dogs mouth and brush the surface of its teeth in a circular motion.
  • After brushing your dogs teeth with the appropriate toothpaste, it is okay for the dog to swallow, you dont need to rinse it out.
  • After brushing, remember to always give your dog a prize, like taking it for a walk, giving it a toy, or just cuddling with your dog.

When Brushing Isnt Possible

  • When brushing your dogs teeth isnt possible, I would recommend giving it a type of dog kibble that prevents dental plaque and tartar from building up.
  • For my dogs, I used Royal Canin kibbles, when brushing isnt possible.
  • For dogs under 25 pounds: Royal Canin dental DS small breed.
  • For dogs over 25 pounds: Royal Canin dental DD.

Fun Fact:
A dogs sense of smell is 100,000 times stronger than a humans.
