I am all for crate-training, but my current dog is only 6lbs, so crate-training is easy...We plan on getting a lab in the next few weeks, and I still want to crate-train. But I cant help but think of it as being harder. Lugging a big huge crate from room to room and I dont know how a huge crate will fit in the car on road trips if we have a lot of luggage...How do most people do it? From room to room I meant that when sleeping, I move my dogs crate in to our room for the night, in the morning after he goes out I block off the kitchen and leave him in there with the crate door open. I just see this as being way too hard to do if we get a 50-80lb lab... but I love the benefits. Help - suggestions?? Thanks!
in regards to johnny B (i cant figure out how to actually respond) - anyways, i really do prefer crate training. i really dont know how i did it with my first dog, but now he absolutely loves his "house" (as we call it). if the door gets shut on accident, he sits right in front and paws at it for you to open it ... he loves it. I could never take it away from him. And, it really does come in handy - not as punishment, but as his safe place. he always feels comfortable no matter where we are if he has his house. And Id want to pass that sense of security onto our new dog...
In regards to JenVT - like I said, I bring the crates from room to room for sleeping (cuz they will sleep in our room), and then to leave them in the kitchen where they hang out while Im at work. - But I do like the idea of folding crates for travel. I can fold it up to save room for luggage, but still have their favorite spot to sleep in when were away. Thanks!

How about you do not crate your dogs? That gets rid of all your problems there. Also everyone that i know that does travel with there dogs has a break down cage that folds when they travel, unless you keep him in the cage when you drive witch i would not do. Most people DO NOT crate there dogs, its useless and mean. Think about yourself laying in a hard cage all night or most of the day, thats horrible! Train your dogs to be good dogs outside of the crate when you are away. I have had dogs all my life and never had to crate one of them even as puppies. Takes a little bit more time but you have a better dog for it. Just my two cents, im not passing judgment or anything.

Looking for advice on dog crates for extra large dogs.?

I have 100 pound German Shepard. His current crate is heavy duty plastic with a wire front. He has bent the wire in the front enough where he can now push his way out and escape. I am looking for a heavy duty crate for a dog this size, one that is very strong and guaranteed not to let the dog escape! Thanks!

Try an all wire crate. The plastic crate is more in closed and its easier for him to get leverage to push on the door. I find the wire crates to be much better. Ive always used them for my dogs, and Ive had some pretty big dogs. Never any escapes. I find the doors on wire crates are more secure than the plasic ones. I dont think you can get a create that will guarantee your dog will not escape, give a wire one a try though. Make sure the wires/bars are thick enough.
